With a recent $5 million investment, the National Science Foundation is creating four big data hubs so scientists can investigate research topics with an everyday impact in their region. The South hub is co-located at Georgia Tech and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Using large-scale computer modeling, CSE Professor Edmond Chow and School of Biology Professor Jeffrey Skolnick have shown the effects of confinement on macromolecules inside cells – and taken the first steps toward simulating a living cell, a capability that could allow them to ask “what-if” questions impossible to ask in real organisms.
